Frozen yogurt, also referred to as "froyo," is a pleasant frozen dessert that has become popular in recent years. It is made using yogurt as the main ingredient but still has a smooth and creamy texture, refreshing taste, just like traditional ice creams.
Frozen yogurt is healthier than traditional ice creams as it contains live and active cultures, which help in digestion. It also uses less heavy cream and is low in fat.
The taste of frozen yogurt is slightly tangy and you can balance it with toppings of your choice like chocolate or fruit syrups or fresh fruits.
This is an easy gluten-free frozen yogurt recipe made in the 1.5 qt. ICE-100 Cuisinart ice cream maker. You can make it to satisfy your sweet tooth, to have a frozen treat on hot summer days, or make it for summer parties, or for your kid's after-school snack.

Ingredients
Making frozen yogurt at home requires only 4 ingredients. Yogurt is the main ingredient and I have used store-bought yogurt. Both full-fat and low-fat yogurt can be used. You can use vanilla-flavored yogurt as well as sweetened one.
Depending on whether you use plain or sweetened yogurt, you will have to adjust the amount of sugar in the recipe. Also, if you use vanilla-flavored yogurt then you will have to add less vanilla extract.
Heavy cream is added to help churn the mixture and make the ice cream of creamy texture.
Instructions
Blend the yogurt, sugar, and vanilla extract in a large mixing bowl with the help of a hand blender using the whisk attachment. Blend on low speed until all the sugar is dissolved. Now add the heavy cream and mix it with a spoon.
Optionally, chill the mixture for about 1-2 hours in the refrigerator. Depending on the ice cream machine, you may have to freeze the bowl for 24 hours before you can make the ice cream in it. So you will have to plan accordingly.
If you are using a compressor ice cream maker then there is no need to freeze the bowl and you can churn the yogurt ice cream once the mixture is ready.
Pour the mixture into the ice cream maker bowl and churn it for about 25 minutes or as per the manufacturer's instructions. The frozen yogurt will be of soft-serve consistency and ready to eat with your favorite fruits and toppings.
If you want a firmer consistency or serve it later, you can freeze it in an airtight container for about 5-6 hours before serving.
Substitutions
- Yogurt - instead of full-fat yogurt, you can use low-fat yogurt. Also, you can use sweetened yogurt in which case you can add less sugar to the mixture.
- Vanilla extract - if you use yogurt with vanilla flavor then you can reduce the amount of vanilla extract added to the mixture.
Serving suggestions
Just like vanilla ice cream, frozen yogurt can be served with your favorite fruit toppings, chocolate syrup, caramel, nuts, and grated chocolate. It can be served in a waffle cone, sugar cone, or bowl.
Fresh fruits like bananas, strawberries, peaches, mango, blueberries, and more can be served with this creamy and delicious frozen yogurt.
Equipment
To mix all the ingredients and make the yogurt ice cream base, I used a hand blender with a whisk attachment. A stand mixer with the wire attachment or a hand mixer can be used instead.
I have also made this frozen yogurt in the 1.5 qt. ICE-100 Cuisinart ice cream maker which has an inbuilt compressor and there is no need to freeze the bowl for 24 hours before churning. The recipe ingredients can be adjusted to be made in your ice cream maker.

Storage
Frozen yogurt can be stored in an airtight container in the freezer for about a month. But it is so delicious that it will be gone even before you know :).
Top tip
- If you use vanilla-flavored yogurt, you can use less vanilla extract in the recipe. You will need only a teaspoon of vanilla extract.
- If you use sweetened yogurt you can reduce the amount of sugar and you will need only about ½ cup in this recipe.
