Air fryer is great for making desserts, especially cakes, quick bread, cookies, and more. Chocolate cake is one of the decadent dessert that is easy to make in the air fryer. No need to worry about turning the oven on in the summer.
It is a perfect quick dessert or to make for a special occasion or the holidays when your oven is busy.
I have made this moist air fryer chocolate cake in bundt pan but a normal cake pan or even mini loaf pans will work fine.

Why you will love this recipe
- Easy to make
- Vegan chocolate cake
- Perfect for any occasion
- Decorate as per your liking
- Can be made in bundt pan or a cake pan.
Ingredients
Only a few basic ingredients are needed to make an air fryer chocolate cake. You will need all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, olive oil, water, sugar, salt, and vanilla extract.
As this is a no-egg recipe, vinegar, baking powder, and baking soda are added as leavening agents.
A good quality Dutch-processed cocoa powder is preferred. You can also substitute olive oil with butter or vegan butter.
Once the cake is baked, icing it is optional. I have applied chocolate ganache made with heavy whipping cream and semi sweet chocolate chips.
Process
The first step to make air fryer chocolate cake is to add all the wet and dry ingredients into the stand mixer bowl. Using the wire attachment of the stand mixer, mix all the ingredients well until a lump free cake batter is formed.
Now the next step is to grease the cake pan, I am using a Bundt pan but any other 6 inch cake pan will work fine. Apply some oil or vegan butter with the help of a basting brush and then dust some all purpose flour so that the cake pan is well coated.
Pour the cake batter into the Bundt pan leaving about an inch from the top. Place the pan into the air fryer basket and air fry for about 30 minutes at 320°F.
After about 30 minutes insert a toothpick or a butter knife around the center of the cake. If it comes out clean then the cake is done else you can air fry it for another few minutes.
Carefully remove the cake pan from the air fryer basket with the help of mittens and let it cool down for about 20 minutes. Then invert and shake it slightly so that the cake comes out from it. Let the cake cool down completely.
Apply some icing like buttercream frosting once the cake has cooled down completely.
Step by step instructions
Step 1: Gather all the ingredients to make chocolate cake.
Step 2: Add all the ingredients into the mixing bowl.
Step 3: Grease and dust the cake pan.
Step 4: Mix all the ingredients to make a lump free batter.
Step 5: Put the batter into the cake pan and air fry at 320°F for 25-30 minutes.
Step 6: Let the cake cool down for 15-20 minutes before removing it from the bundt pan.
Step 7: After removing the cake from the pan let it cool down completely
Step 8: Apply chocolate ganache and decorate it as per choice.
Decorations
Icing - apply buttercream frosting or chocolate ganache and optionally decorate with your favorite toppings.
Holidays/Christmas - decorate with green, red, and white colored sprinkles
Valentine's Day - add a little red food color to make a pink color butter cream frosting and decorate with red and pink sprinkles.
Memorial Day/Independence Day - add patriotic colors - blue, white and red and decorate the cake with frosting. Finish it by topping it with blue, red, and white colored sprinkles
Thanksgiving - top it with yellow, orange and white colored frosting and sprinkles.
Substitutions
Butter - instead of oil, you can use butter or vegan butter, however, the cake will become a little dense after it cools down as the butter with solidify.
Cacao powder - cocoa powder can be replaced with cacao powder.
Variations
- Nuts - sometimes I like to add some chopped walnuts or pecans to the cake batter.
- Cupcakes - you can easily make chocolate cupcakes in the air fryer and reduce the overall air frying time. Also, check out these air fryer vanilla cupcakes.
- Topping - the cake can be served as is, with some chocolate ganache, or frosting.
Equipment
I have made this chocolate cake in 4 qt. Instant Vortex Plus air fryer. It can be made in any air fryer, basket style or one with the tray just that the cake pan should fit well.
A 6 inch bundt pan or cake pan will work fine. Depending on the size of your cake pan and the capacity of the air fryer, the overall cooking time may vary by a few minutes.
Storage
Chocolate cake without any icing or ganache can be stored at room temperature in an air tight container for 3-4 days. If you apply icing or ganache then it is best to refrigerate it and it can be stored for about a week.
To store it longer, portion it and freeze it in freezer safe containers for upto 3 months. When you plan to eat it, you can leave the container in the fridge for few hours until it thaws and then enjoy it :).
Top tip
- Grease and dust the bundt pan or the cake pan to ensure the cake comes out smoothly.
- Insert a toothpick or a butter knife to check for doneness. If it comes out clean it is done, else air fry it for another few minutes.
