Guacamole is a popular Mexican dip and served with salsa and chips as a side dish or as a starter in Mexican restaurants. I love eating the veggie bowl at Chipotle and enjoy it with guac.
You really don't have to go to a restaurant to enjoy some fresh guac as it is really easy to make it at home with very few ingredients. It can me made with or without tomatoes or onions.
If you have a food processor, making guacamole in it just takes about 30 seconds. However, you can also make it easily without a food processor as well.
It is a perfect party and game day food and can be served with chips and salsa. It can also be served with other Mexican dishes like quesedilla, enchiladas, tacos, and burritos.
Guacamole ingredients
Fresh homemade guacamole requires very few ingredients. Ripe avocados, onions, tomatoes, garlic, and jalapeno pepper are all you need. While selecting the avocados, press them slightly and they should feel soft, if they are hard, they are still raw and cannot be used to make the guac.
White or yellow onions work well, however if you have the red ones, they will be fine as well, you can use a little less of it as they have a stronger flavor.
I like to add some tomatoes in my guac but if you don't like them, you can skip them. Also, if you are planning to make guac in bulk for freezing, it is best to avoid adding tomatoes and onions and add later while serving.
Depending on how spicy you like, you can add 2-3 slices of jalapeno or can skip it altogether if you are going to serve it to kids. Adding some lime juice or lemon juice in the add enhances the flavor and also help prevent the guacamole from oxidizing.
To prep all the ingredients just cut the onions and tomatoes into quarters. Pell the avocado and cut it into halves around the seeds. Twist it and then the two halves will separate, remove the seed and preserve it to keep it on top of the guacamole to prevent it from browning.
Can you make guacamole in food processor?
Making guacamole in the food processor is really easy. It just takes about 30 seconds and fresh guacamole is ready to serve as a side or as an appetizer. Once all the ingredients are prepped, it is all a matter of pulsing them in the food processor.
Attach the chopping blade to the food processor bowl and place all the ingredients except lime juice. Close and lock the lid and then keep pressing the pulse button a few times to make smooth guacamole based on your desired consistency.
Unlock the food processor and transfer the guacamole to a serving bowl. You can adjust the salt to your taste at this stage and mix in the lime juice. Serve it fresh with chips. While serving, I like to keep the avocado seed in the serving bowl, this helps to avoid the guacamole from oxidizing or turning brown.
What goes good with guacamole?
Guacamole is served as a side dish with Mexican food, be it enchiladas, quesadillas, burritos, veggie bowls made with cilantro lime rice, black beans, and fajitas. It is also served as a starter or appetizer along with chips and salsa.
It tastes so delicious that it is not restricted to being served with Mexican food but can be topped over pizza, pasta, or toast. It can also be a great dip for parties with a platter of chips and veggies.
How to store leftover guacamole?
It is best to serve and finish the fresh homemade guacamole. But that is not possible every time and you may have leftovers. Guacamole usually starts browning after a few hours and so storing it can be challenging.
Personally, I like to store it in an air-tight container and squeeze some lime juice and place the avocado pit on it. It stays fresh for up to 2 days. Here are some other ways to store leftover guacamole in the fridge and hope you find them useful.
Can you freeze guacamole?
Guacamole is best served fresh however, there may be times when you have avocados in bulk and want to use them before they go bad. You can make guacamole in advance and freeze it but it is best to not add onions and tomatoes while making the guacamole.
Onions and tomatoes are watery and change the texture after freezing. So it is best to make guacamole without them and store it in freezer-safe ziplock bags or freezer-safe containers.
When you are ready to serve, you can simply put the guacamole in the fridge overnight and then add chopped tomatoes and onions just before serving.
