Steel cut oats are the least processed oats from the three different variety of oats available in the stores - rolled oats, instant oats, and steel cut oats. You can read this post on differences between the type of oats (reference healthline.com)
Personally, I like to use water to make oats, however you can use milk, almond milk, or a combination of milk and water. The oats turn out perfectly creamy even when cooked in water. While serving, you can use your favorite fruits, nuts, dried fruits for topping.
How much water do you put in steel cut oats?
The ratio of steel cut oats to water while cooking in the instant pot is 1:3. So if you are making steel cut oats for 2, you will be using ½ cup of oats and 1 ½ cup of water. You can just follow the ratio and the cooking time will remain the same.
How to cook steel cut oats in instant pot?
I like to cook oats fresh and make them on the day I plan to eat, so I usually make a small batch. Instant pot is perfect to make steel cut oats for 2 using the pot in pot method.
To make steel cut oats using the pot in pot method, pour 1 cup of water in the instant pot liner. In another small pot add the oats and water and cover it with the lid. Place the small pot inside the liner on top of the trivet.
Now close and lock the lid and pressure cook for 10 minutes followed by a natural pressure release. You are completely hands off and there is no need to monitor it at all. When you are ready, you can just top it with your favorite toppings and enjoy a warm breakfast.
How to make overnight steel cut oats in instant pot?
With the instant pot, you can plan your breakfast ahead of time, in fact the night before. The delay timer is very handy to make overnight oats in the instant pot. You will have to press it after selecting the pressure cook mode and the time.
The process and time for overnight oats remains the same. All you need to do is set the delay timer to the number of hours before you plan to have the oatmeal in the morning. Considering the overall time to cook and do a natural pressure release is about 40 minutes, you can set the delay timer accordingly.
What to eat with oatmeal?
Oatmeal can be served with a variety of toppings. My favorite is mixed berries, apples, and walnuts. You can also serve it with some bananas, other nuts like almonds, pecans.
To add some sweetness brown sugar, maple syrup, or jam can be added. It also tastes great with some cinnamon powder and brown sugar. Dried fruits like raisins, cranberries, and apricots also go well with oatmeal.
Oatmeal can be served with toppings of your choice and you can get creative with it. Although it is a popular breakfast but it can be eaten for meals too and can be served sweet or savory.
Can you refrigerate oatmeal?
Yes! Oatmeal can be stored in the fridge for 4-5 days. If you have any leftover or plan to make a bigger batch of oatmeal, you can allow it to cool down completely and then store it in the fridge in an air tight container.
On refrigerating, oatmeal can absorb water and become a little dry. While reheating, add some water or milk to adjust the consistency.
