Jasmine rice is a type of long-grain rice originating from Southeast Asia. It is fragrant, aromatic, and comparatively sticky compared to other types of cooked white rice. It is commonly served with Asian dishes.
Instant pot is a no-fuss and easy method to pressure cook rice. Jasmine rice can be cooked in a pressure cooker like the instant pot. You can make a small batch of 1 cup of jasmine rice in the instant pot liner directly or using the pot-in-pot method.
This is an easy instant pot jasmine rice recipe. It needs no monitoring like the stove top method and is ready in under 30 minutes from start to finish. It is served with Asian dishes like Manchurian, kung pao chickpeas, and Thai curries.
Ingredients
To cook perfect jasmine rice in the instant pot, you will need jasmine rice and water. For more flavor, you can use vegetable stock instead of water. If you want, you can add a little salt and some oil while cooking but it is optional.
Since we are making a small batch of 1 cup of jasmine rice in the instant pot, we will only need 1 cup of jasmine rice and 1.5 cups of water.
The ratio of 1:1.5 of jasmine rice to water works well for pressure cooking in the instant pot using either of the methods.
If you like the rice to be al dente, you can use a 1:1.25 ratio of rice to water ratio. Personally, I prefer to use the 1:1.5 ratio and the rice turns out perfect and soft to bite.
Instructions
Whether you want to cook a small batch of 1 cup jasmine rice in the instant pot or if you want to cook a larger batch of 2 cups or more, it can directly be cooked in the main pot.
Jasmine rice can be cooked in an instant pot without any monitoring. It can be cooked in the instant pot liner directly or by using the pot-in-pot method.
Cooking jasmine rice directly in the instant pot liner is fairly easy. Rinse the rice with cold water to get rid of any residue. Put the rinsed rice and water in the ratio of 1:1.5 jasmine rice to water in the instant pot.
Lock the lid and keep the pressure knob in the sealing position. Pressure cook the rice for 5 minutes on high-pressure mode followed by a 10-minute natural pressure release.
Release any remaining pressure by moving the pressure knob to the venting position until the silver pin drops. Fluff the rice with a fork.
Jasmine rice can also be cooked in the instant pot using the pot-in-pot method. If you want to cook a small batch of 1 cup jasmine rice then the pot-in-pot method is very convenient, especially when using a 6 qt. instant pot or larger.
To make rice using the pot-in-pot method, pour a cup of water into the instant pot liner or main pot. Place a trivet on top of it. In a small pot add the rice and water and place it on the trivet and cover it with a lid.
For the pot-in-pot method, the small pot or a bowl can either be made of silicone, stainless steel, or pyrex glass. However, Pyrex does not mention anything about using its products under pressure in its usage guide.
Close the lid and then cook on high-pressure mode for 6 minutes with the pressure release valve in the sealing position. Allow the pressure to release naturally for 10 minutes.
Release the remaining pressure manually by moving the release knob in the venting position. Fluff the rice with a fork and enjoy it with your favorite dish.
Serving suggestions
Jasmine rice is served with many Asian dishes like stir-fries, spicy eggplant, kung pao, veg Manchurian, and Thai curries.
Storage
Any leftover rice can be stored in the fridge for 2-3 days. When you are ready to eat, reheat the rice in the instant pot, microwave, or on the stovetop. Jasmine rice tends to dry up once it is refrigerated. Add a few tablespoons of water and cover it before reheating.
You can also make delicious, kid-approved, vegan fried rice or cilantro lime rice with any leftover rice.
