Ingredients
Stuffed mushrooms with cream cheese require only a handful of ingredients. The main ingredient is mushrooms, the larger they are the better it is. It makes it easy to scoop the inside and fill it with stuffing.
I have used the baby bella mushrooms and they are just perfect to make this delicious appetizer. Portobello mushroom will work as well too.
For the stuffing, cream cheese, and chopped spinach are the main ingredients. For flavor, some garlic powder and Italian seasoning are mixed into the mixture. You will need very little salt as the cream cheese already has a lot, so be careful when you add it.
Optionally, you can add some grated mozzarella cheese on top of the mushrooms. If you like a hint of spiciness then pepper jack cheese would work well too.
Instructions
Thoroughly rinse the mushrooms and get rid of any dirt on them. Pat dry the mushrooms with a kitchen towel and now they are ready to be used. Ensure they are well dried otherwise they can become watery after air frying.
The first step to make stuffed mushrooms is to remove the stems from the mushrooms and scoop the inside of the mushroom caps with a fork or a spoon. Apply some butter and garlic powder mixture to both, the inside and the outside of the mushrooms.
In a medium size bowl, place the softened cream cheese, chopped spinach, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and salt. Mix well until you get a smooth mixture.
With the help of a spoon, fill the mushroom caps with the spinach cream cheese mixture. Ensure that you do not over-stuff the mushrooms or else the cheese will ooze out once you air fry them.
Place the mushrooms in the air fryer basket. There is no need to preheat the air fryer as it can get difficult to place the mushrooms in the air fryer when it is hot.
Air fry the stuffed mushrooms in the air fryer for about 8 minutes at 390°F. Optionally, after about six minutes, open the air fryer basket and sprinkle some grated cheese on top of the mushrooms.
Continue to air fry for the remaining time or until the cheese is golden brown in color. Transfer them to a serving dish with the help of a silicone spatula.
Serving suggestions
These mouthwatering stuffed mushrooms are best served warm. They can be served as a snack or as an appetizer. You can serve them with some sriracha sauce or sprinkle some red chili flakes if you want them spicier.
They go well with pasta, mac and cheese, and soups. Though they are fantastic and delicious as is.

Variations
These air fryer stuffed mushrooms are gluten-free and make a great low-carb appetizer. You can adapt this recipe to suit your taste.
- Spicy - add some finely chopped serrano peppers to the cream cheese mixture or sprinkle some red chili flakes on the top while serving.
- Cheese - Depending on your preference, you can add some grated mozzarella, pepper jack, or cheddar cheese on top of the mushrooms.
Equipment
I have made these stuffed mushrooms in the Instant Vortex Plus air fryer and it will work fine in any air fryer like the basket style or the tray style.
The only thing is that depending on the air fryer you may have to air fry the mushrooms in multiple batches.
Apart from the air fryer, you will also need a basting brush to apply some butter and garlic powder mix on the outside and the inside of the mushroom caps.
Storage
It is best to use the stuffed mushrooms once they are cooked and still warm. If they are left out for a longer time they will become a little chewy. So it is recommended that you cook them only when you are ready to serve.
However, if you have any leftovers, you can store them in an air-tight container in the refrigerator and reheat them in the microwave for a few seconds before serving. They won't be of the same texture though.
If you are planning to make them for an event, party, or potluck, then you can prepare them and place them on a tray and cover them with a food wrap. You can keep them in the fridge until you are ready to air fry and serve them.
Top tip
- Thoroughly rinse and clean the mushrooms to get rid of any dirt. Pat dry them with a kitchen towel to remove any moisture. This will avoid mushrooms from being watery.
- When you are planning ahead for an event, you can stuff the mushroom caps and place them on a tray, cover them with a food wrap, and store them in the fridge. When you are ready to serve, air fry them and serve them hot.

I put Mozzarella cheese on top before I put them in the air fryer by turning them upside down and pressing them down on top of the shredded cheese. The crispy cheese was a plus.
Alpa Jain says
Hi JoAnn,
I am glad it turned out great and yes the extra cheese is indeed delicious 🙂
