    Ingredients

To make air fryer baked sweet potatoes, you will need whole sweet potatoes, you can use any size of sweet potatoes, just that they should fit in your air fryer basket.

I have used large sweet potatoes, about a pound in weight, but medium and small sizes can be baked as well.

A little bit of oil is applied to the top of the sweet potatoes. This helps the skin not get dry while baking. You can use any type of oil, olive oil, grapeseed oil, or avocado oil.

    Instructions

To bake whole sweet potatoes in the air fryer, first thoroughly rinse and scrub the sweet potatoes with water. You can use a vegetable scrubber to scrub them.

Then apply some oil using a basting brush or with your hands. There is no need to poke holes in the sweet potatoes with a fork. I have not found any difference in air frying if you poke the sweet potatoes or not.

Apply oil using a basting brush.

Place the sweet potatoes in the air fryer basket. There is no need to preheat the air fryer. Bake the whole sweet potatoes in the air fryer for 35-40 minutes at the temperature of 400°F.

After about 18-20 minutes, or when the air fryer beeps to turn the food, open the air fryer basket and flip the sweet potatoes. This ensures that they are evenly cooked from all sides.

Continue to air fry the sweet potatoes for the remaining time. Once the time is up, open the air fryer basket and check the sweet potatoes for doneness by inserting a toothpick or a butter knife at the center of the sweet potato. If it slides in easily, they are done, else you can air fry them for a few more minutes.

    Serving suggestions

Air fryer whole sweet potatoes turn out light, fluffy, creamy, and absolutely delicious. They just melt in the mouth. They can be served as a side dish with your meals. You can serve it with the skin and scoop the inside while eating and discard the skin.

They are best served warm once they are baked in the air fryer. A dollop of butter, some salt, pepper, cinnamon powder, and brown sugar, all go well on top of the sweet potatoes.

You can also grate some cheese, serve them with sour cream, or garnish it with some garlic chives, or cilantro. You can also mash the sweet potato flesh, add some butter, and make mashed sweet potatoes!

    Equipment

I have made whole sweet potatoes in the Instant Vortex Plus air fryer. They can be made in any type of air fryer, be it basket style or tray style, or any size.

Depending on your air fryer and the number of sweet potatoes you want to bake, you may have to air fry them in multiple batches. Also, the air frying time will vary depending on the size of the sweet potatoes.

    Storage

It is best to serve the baked sweet potatoes warm once they are out of the air fryer. Any leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for 2-3 days in an airtight container.

You can eat the refrigerated sweet potato as is or warm it up a little bit in the microwave.

If you make a lot of sweet potatoes in the air fryer, you can also freeze them after mashing them. It is best to let them cool down completely, and mash and freeze them in portions in freezer-safe ziplock bags or containers.

Frozen sweet potatoes can be defrosted in the microwave on the defrost setting.
