Turmeric is a popular spice used in Indian cuisine and around the world. It is anti-inflammatory and has many health benefits. It is a root like ginger, which is boiled, peeled, dried, and then commonly sold as powder. You will also find fresh turmeric and dried turmeric roots as well in grocery stores.

I like to grind turmeric powder from dry turmeric roots. They are quite hard and difficult to blend directly in a blender. I have learnt this new trick to make turmeric powder from my mom and it is very easy. Grinding your own spices can ensure freshness and quality.

    Ingredients

To make turmeric powder from dry turmeric roots, all you will need is dry turmeric roots. You can find turmeric roots in Indian grocery stores, grocery stores, or online.

    Instructions

Place the dried turmeric roots in a microwave safe plate and cover them. Heat it for about 30-60 seconds. After a few seconds you will start hearing popping sounds. The root puffs up and feels very light in weight.

After every 30 seconds, check for puffed turmeric roots and remove them. Continue heating the rest until all of them are well puffed up. Let the roots cool down and they will be ready for blending.

Step 2: Heat in the microwave for 30-60 seconds or more if needed.

Using Vitamix dry jar blend the dry turmeric roots into a fine powder. Start for low speed to highest and blend for 30-45 seconds or more if needed. You should get a fine powder.

Though the powder looks fine, it does have some coarse particles from the hard skin, so using a fine mesh, sift the powder and discard the hard particles. Turmeric powder is ready for use.

    Serving suggestions

Add about ยผ teaspoon turmeric powder to a glass of hot milk to make golden milk or turmeric milk and add some sugar to taste.

It can also be added to Indian curries. Check out this recipe collection about how to use turmeric powder.

    Equipment

To blend turmeric roots into a fine powder, a blender like Vitamix or any other powerful blender is needed. Vitamix dry jar or stainless-steel jar is perfect for grinding dry spices. To sift the hard particles, a fine sieve of size 80 or 70 is helpful.

    Storage

Turmeric powder can be stored on glass jar in cool and dry place for a year or even more. It can be made in bulk or in small batches as needed.

    Top tip

    • All the roots will not puff up at once so, intermittently remove the puffed ones and then microwave the rest.
