What is tutti frutti ice cream made of?

Tutti frutti ice cream is made with only a few ingredients. The main ingredient is tutti frutti or candied dried fruits. You can usually find tutti frutti in Indian grocery stores.

The base of the ice cream is made with whole milk, heavy cream, and sugar. Some custard powder is added to make the base thick and add the desired flavor. Any custard powder like vanilla or other flavor works well.

Tutti frutti ice cream is fruity in taste and the flavor will come from the custard powder you use. I have used plain vanilla custard powder so it has a vanilla taste. However, you can use any other flavor as per your liking.

How to make tutti frutti ice cream at home?

Once you have all the ingredients, making tutti frutti ice cream at home is very easy. Since the taste comes from the custard powder, this recipe requires boiling the milk to which the custard powder is added.

Depending on your ice cream maker, you will have to freeze the bowl for 24 hours before you can churn the ice cream. I have made this ice cream in a Cuisinart ICE 100 ice cream maker with a compressor and it requires no chilling of the bowl.

If you are looking for an ice cream maker and feel overwhelmed with the choices or are confused, you can check my blog post on which ice cream maker to buy. It will help you decide what ice cream maker will suit your family's needs and budget.

First, keep some milk aside, and in a small bowl mix the milk and custard powder well until there are no lumps. Now boil the remaining milk and sugar on the stovetop in a saucepan on medium flame.

Once the milk comes to a boil, add the custard powder and milk mixture and keep mixing it with a whisk. Continue cooking until it comes to a boil again. This can take about a minute. You just want to ensure that there is no raw taste of the custard powder in the milk.

Turn off the flame and add the heavy cream and mix well. Allow the mixture to cool and then chill it in the fridge for about 2 hours.

Stir the chilled mixture and pour it into the ice cream machine bowl and churn the mixture for about 35-40 minutes. Just before the ice cream is almost churned and is of soft consistency, add the tutti frutti and continue churning for another few minutes.

Transfer the ice cream to a freezer-safe ice cream container and freeze it for 5-6 hours before serving. Creamy and delicious ice cream is now ready to indulge in 🙂

    Serving suggestions

Tutti frutti ice cream is delicious and enjoyed by kids and adults alike. It tastes great as is and you can top it with some more tutti frutti, whipped cream, chopped nuts like walnuts and pecans, or raisins.

You can also serve it with the popular falooda drink or get creative and serve it on top of basundi shots. You can also serve it in the banana split sundae and replace one of the classic flavors in it.

    Storage

Just like any homemade ice cream, tutti frutti ice cream can be stored in the freezer for about a month. It is best for the first two weeks and then you might see a thin layer of ice crystals on the top. It can easily be scooped and removed.
