Oatmeal dinner rolls are a great alternative to the vegan dinner rolls, milk buns, or buttermilk rolls. It is a great way to introduce healthy oats in your diet and that too in a way you will not even realize.

It is very easy to make oatmeal buns with old fashioned rolled oats. This is a vegan recipe, and it makes a light, fluffy, and delicious oatmeal dinner rolls which are perfect for serving at the dinner table.

    Ingredients

This homemade oatmeal rolls recipe requires very few basic pantry ingredients. You will need bread flour, old-fashioned oats, salt, lukewarm water, oil, sugar, and instant yeast.

Instead of bread flour, you can use all-purpose flour. The difference is not significant and you can use either of the flours interchangeably.

There is no need to soak or cook the rolled oats to make the rolls. You can just add the dry oats along with other ingredients.

    How to use Bread Machine

    Instructions

Making oatmeal rolls is extremely easy. The first step is to make the dough, which can be made in bread machine or using stand mixer.

To make dough in bread machine, all you need to do is place all the wet and dry ingredients in the pan in the order recommended by the bread machine manufacturer. Select and start the dough cycle.

    Oatmeal bread ingredients.

Step 1: Gather all the ingredients

Oatmeal bread ingredients in bread machine pan.

Step 2: Prepare to make dough in bread machine on stand mixer.

The oatmeal rolls dough may look a little moist in the beginning but as the oats get well mixed, it starts leaving the sides of the bread machine pan.

If using a stand mixer, add all the ingredients in the bowl and knead with dough hook for about 12 minutes. Shape the dough into a ball and place it into a bowl. Let it rise in a warm place for about 45-60 minutes until it doubles in volume. Check out how to make dough in stand mixer.

    Step 3: Dough rising.

Step 4: Remove dough on lightly floured surface.

Divide the dough into 15 equal parts, about 48 grams each. Shape them into smooth balls by tucking all the edges together to the bottom side. Place them in a baking tray lined with parchment paper and spacing them ½ - 1 inch apart.

Cover the tray with a cling wrap or a kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 45 minutes or until it doubles in volume.

Step 5: Divide the dough into 15 pieces and make smooth balls.

Step 6: Let the dough balls rise.

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Remove the cling wrap or kitchen towel and then bake the rolls for about 20 minutes until golden brown. Take them out of the oven and apply some butter on top using a basting brush. This gives the buns a nice glaze.

Step 7: Bake the oatmeal rolls in oven at 350°F for 20 minutes.

Step 8: Optionally apply butter for a shine.

    Substitutions

    • All-purpose flour - instead of bread flour, you can use all-purpose flour. You will not see a much difference.
    • Sweetener - instead of sugar, you can add maple syrup or honey (for non-vegan).
    • Butter - instead of oil you can use butter or vegan butter.

    Variations

You can make oatmeal bread in the oven. Shape the dough into a loaf and place in a 9-inch by 5-inch loaf pan. Let and let it rise for about 45 minutes to an hour. Bake the bread in the oven at 350°F for about 25-30 minutes. Let it cool down on a rack completely before slicing it.

    Equipment

I make these rolls regularly and use a stand mixer or bread machine to make the dough. A food scale helps in weighing the flour which gives consistent results. To make the rolls softer and lighter, sift the flour with a sifter.

The rolls are baked in a convection oven. I have used a 13-inch by 9-inches deep casserole baking tray to make 15 rolls. A larger baking tray (15-inch by 11-inch) can be used to make 20 smaller size buns.

    Storage

Oatmeal buns can be stored at room temperature in a bread box or an air-tight container for 3-4 days. If you want to store them longer, it is best to freeze them in an airtight container or Ziplock bag. When you want to use it, you can warm them in the oven for about 15 minutes at 350°F.

It is not advisable to store the rolls in the refrigerator as they will become too dry.

    Top tip

There is no need to moisten the rolled oats, they are added in the dry form to make this recipe.

For consistent results, it is best to weigh the flour instead of measuring it by cups.

    Instructions

Option 1: Make dough in bread machine

    • Place the wet and dry ingredients in the order required by your bread machine.
1 cup Water, 4 tablespoon Oil, 2 tablespoon Organic cane sugar, 1 teaspoon Salt, 2 ½ cup Bread flour , 2 ¼ teaspoon Instant yeast, 1 cup Oatmeal
    • Close the lid and select the "dough" cycle.
    • Once the cycle completes, remove the dough from the pan on a lightly floured surface.

Option 2: Make dough in stand mixer

    • Place the wet and dry ingredients into the stand mixer bowl.
1 cup Water, 4 tablespoon Oil, 2 tablespoon Organic cane sugar, 1 teaspoon Salt, 2 ½ cup Bread flour , 2 ¼ teaspoon Instant yeast, 1 cup Oatmeal
    • Attach the dough hook and knead on setting 2 for about 12 minutes until the dough is well kneaded and attaches to the hook.
    • Make a smooth dough ball, apply some oil to the bottom of the bowl and place the dough ball in it for rising.
    • Cover the bowl and keep it in a warm place for about 60 minutes until the dough rises and becomes double in volume.
    • Remove the dough from the bowl on a lightly floured surface.

    Shape dough to make buns

    • Divide the dough into 15 equal parts of about 48 grams each.
    • Shape them into smooth balls and tuck all the edges to the bottom side to make it smooth from the top.
    • Place them in a 13-inch by 9-inch baking tray lined with parchment paper keeping 1-2 finger space between the balls.
    • Cover with a food wrap or a kitchen towel so that it does not dry up.
    • Allow it to rise for about 45-60 minutes until it has doubled in volume.

    Bake in the oven

    • Preheat the oven to 350°F.
    • Remove the food wrap gently and then place the baking tray in the oven.
    • Bake for about 20 minutes on 350°F or until the crust is golden brown in color.
    • Take the baking tray out of the oven.

    Final touches

    • Apply some butter on top of the buns using a basting brush.

    Notes

    • Sifting and weighing the flour helps make the bread soft. Sifting is optional, however, weighing the flour gives consistent results.
    • To make about 20 smaller buns, use a 15 inch by 11 inch tray and make dough balls of about 36 grams each.

Why cant you just plain old knead it with your hands? That is part of the fun of making bread. Gives you a workout too.

        Hi Kate,

Kneading by hand is always an option if you prefer that. With busy life, I find it easier to use appliances and save time and energy.
