Hamburger buns are extremely easy to make at home using a bread machine. They are soft, delicious, and perfect to make your favorite burger or sandwich.
The best thing about making burger buns at home is you have control over the ingredients used. Also, once you make these burger buns at home, you will not want the store-bought ones anymore!
These homemade hamburger buns are eggless and can be made vegan too. They are made with very few pantry staples.
Ingredients
It is absolutely easy to make soft hamburger buns with no egg in the bread machine. You will need basic pantry ingredients like bread flour or all-purpose flour, instant yeast, sugar, salt, oil, and water.
Instant yeast or bread machine yeast works great for making bread or dough in the bread machine. Check out my blog post on which yeast to use in a bread machine.
As these are eggless, there is no need for an egg wash but a coating of milk or plant-based milk works wonders and then you can sprinkle sesame seeds or bagel seasoning.

Instructions
The first step is to make the dough using the bread machine and the key to soft bread is by aerating the flour (by sifting) and also weighing it (using a food scale) instead of measuring by cups.
This ensures a consistent outcome every time. Read more about making the dough in a bread machine.
The "Dough" cycle in a bread machine does all the job of mixing, kneading, and dough's first rise. While the machine does all the tasks, you have all the time to prepare the burger patties.
Once the dough cycle is complete and the dough has been through its first rise, remove the dough from the bread machine container.

Once the dough cycle is complete, take the dough out of the bread machine pan and knead it on a lightly floured surface for a few seconds to make a smooth dough ball.
Divide the dough into 6 or 8 pieces and make round balls by rolling it between your palms. Tuck all the sides to the bottom to get a smooth surface on the top of the dough ball.
Lightly press the balls between your palms and place the balls in a baking tray, at least 2 inches apart else they will stick to each other while rising and end up like dinner rolls.
Tip: Add a little bit of flour if the dough is a little sticky while kneading.

For the second or final rise, cover and place the tray in a warm place until they double in volume. Optionally, place it in the oven and turn the oven on the "warm" setting for 5 minutes and then let them rest for 90 minutes for the second rise.
Once the dough balls are through the second rise, remove the burger buns from the oven and preheat the oven to 350°F.
While the oven is preheating, apply some milk (plant-based for vegan) on the hamburger buns using a basting brush. This gives a nice glaze to the burger buns and also helps to hold onto any toppings like bagel seasoning, sesame seeds, or poppy seeds.

Once the oven is preheated to 350°F, place the risen hamburger buns and bake them at 350°F for about 16-18 minutes. Once the burger buns are golden brown the burger buns are ready.
This recipe yields 6 large buns or 8 medium size burger buns.
Equipment
I have made this hamburger buns dough in the 2 lb. Hamilton Beach Artisan bread maker using the dough cycle. This recipe should work well for any bread machine.
You will also need a baking sheet to bake the burger buns, using parchment paper is optional.
Once you remove the buns from the oven, allow them to cool down completely on a wire rack, and then slice it with a serrated bread knife.
Storage
Homemade burger buns can be stored at room temperature for 3-4 days. You can also freeze them for about a month in freezer-safe containers or ziplock bags. When you are ready to eat, you can reheat them in the oven for about 5 minutes at 350°F.

Bread Machine Hamburger Buns
Equipment
- Convection Oven
Ingredients
Wet ingredients
- ⅔ cup Water microwave 20 seconds
- 3 tablespoon Oil
Dry ingredients
- 240 gms Bread flour 2 cups, or all-purpose flour
- 4 teaspoon Organic cane sugar
- ½ teaspoon Salt
- ½ tablespoon Bread Machine yeast or instant yeast
For brushing and topping
- 1 tablespoon Milk for coating
- 2 tablespoon sesame seeds optional
Instructions
Making dough in bread machine
- Add the ingredients (water, oil, sugar, salt, bread flour, and yeast) in the order recommended by the bread machine manufacturer and start the "Dough" cycle.
- Once the dough cycle is complete, remove the dough from the container and knead it on a lightly floured surface for a few seconds to get a soft and smooth dough ball.
Shaping the dough
- Divide the dough into 6 equal parts.
- Make a smooth ball from each piece and press lightly between your palms and place it on the tray. Place them at least 2-inch apart, if the gap is less, they will rise like dinner rolls.
Final rise
- Cover the tray with another tray and keep it in a warm place. Optionally, place it in the oven and turn the oven on the "warm" setting for 5 minutes and then let them rest for 90 minutes for the second rise.
- After the balls have risen well, apply some milk with a basting brush, this gives the burgers a nice shine once they are baked. Optionally sprinkle some sesame seeds.
Baking in oven
- Bake in a preheated oven at 350 deg F for about 18-20 minutes till they are golden brown.
- Place them on a cooling rack until cooled. Store them in air tight container for 2-3 days
Notes
- You can also add poppy seeds on the burgers along with sesame seeds.
- Once the burger buns are ready, they may seem to be hard however they will soften as they cool down.
- Home made bread can be stored in an airtight container for 3-4 days.
- It is best to weigh the flour using a food scale for best and consistent results.
- Dough can also be kneaded in a stand mixer and then proved in the instant pot or oven for about 1 hour before shaping into rolls.
- Check out this post for detailed instructions on how to knead dough in stand mixer and proof it in the instant pot.
- Follow the remaining steps starting from "shaping the dough"

I just bought a Cuisinart Bread Machine late June of 2022. (my very first machine!) I have made these buns 6 times now and am IN LOVE with this recipe! I made another bun recipe once and this one is, by far, the best one. Easy and very good tasting. Thank you!
