    Bread Machine Burger Buns

My kids love cheeseburgers and especially with home made burger buns. It is extremely easy to make burger buns at home using bread machine.

Earlier, every time I would buy the burger buns from any store, the list of ingredients made me think of looking for healthier options.

The success in making dinner rolls using my bread machine gave me the idea and confidence to make burger buns at home. And yes, they turned out great! My kids gave me two thumbs up for the cheeseburgers made with homemade burger buns.

How to make burger buns in bread machine

The first step is to make the dough using the bread machine and the key to soft bread is by aerating the flour (by sifting) and also weighing it (using a food scale) instead of measuring by cups.

This ensures a consistent outcome every time. Read more about making the dough in a bread machine.

The "Dough" cycle in a bread machine does all the job of mixing, kneading and dough's first rise. While the machine does all the task, you have all the time to prepare the burger patties.

Instant yeast works great for making bread or dough in the bread machine. Check out my blog on which yeast to use in a bread machine.

Once the dough cycle is complete and the dough has been through its first rise, remove the dough from the bread machine container.

    How to shape burger buns?

Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for a few seconds to make a smooth dough ball. Divide the dough into 6 or 8 pieces and make round balls by rolling it between your palms. Tuck all the sides to the bottom to get a smooth surface on the top of the dough ball.

Lightly press the balls between your palms and place the balls in a baking tray, at least 2 inches apart else they will stick to each other while rising and end up like dinner rolls.

Tip: Add a little bit of flour if the dough is a little sticky while kneading.

How do you make your buns rise?

For the second rise, cover and place the tray in a warm place until they double in volume. Optionally, place it in the oven and turn the oven on the "warm" setting for 5 minutes and then let them rest for 90 minutes for the second rise.

Once the dough balls are through the second rise, remove the burger buns from the oven and preheat the oven to 350 deg F.

While the oven is preheating, apply some milk (or plant based for vegan) on the burger buns using a basting brush. This gives a nice glaze to the burger buns and also helps to hold on to any toppings like sesame seeds and/or poppy seeds.

How to bake hamburger buns in oven?

Once the oven is preheated to 350 deg F, place the risen hamburger buns and bake them at 350 deg F for about 16-18 minutes. Once the burger buns are golden brown and you start seeing the brownish discharge from the sesame seeds, the burger buns are ready.

This recipe yields 6 large buns or 8 medium size burger buns.

    • It is best to weigh the flour using a food scale for best and consistent results.
    • Dough can also be kneaded in a stand mixer and then proved in the instant pot or oven for about 1 hour before shaping into rolls.
      • Check out this post for detailed instructions on how to knead dough in stand mixer and proof it in the instant pot.
